From his time on pirate radio in the Swinging Sixties to being the voice that launched Classic FM, Nick Bailey’s career spans fifty years of broadcasting. This candid memoir takes us from Nick’s early childhood in post-war London to the glorious sunshine of Sydney and onwards, as he pursues his ambitions in radio, indulges his passion for travel and looks for love. In locations as diverse as the pitching waves of the Irish Sea, Cold War Berlin, the sweltering Australian outback and the last days of colonial Hong Kong, Nick brushes shoulders with the likes of the Duke of Edinburgh, Twiggy, Peter Ustinov, Olivia Newton-John, the Bee Gees, Henry Ford II, Ludovico Einaudi, the King of Tonga and Iggy Pop. Illustrated with over 140 personal photos Foreword by Paul Gambaccini

From Comment
2021-09-23 Stuart .... Nick Bailey’s book ‘Across the Waves’ is both entertaining and engaging.

He packs in plenty of anecdotes of his time at various radio stations around the world (not only about fellow broadcasters and DJs such as Tony Prince but also the occasional nugget, for instance, of having sometimes shared a bedroom with Olivia Newton-John when he was growing up in Melbourne.)

Among the highlights are his stint as a newsreader for pirate station Radio Caroline before it was taken off air and then, towards the end of his career, his many years spent at Classic FM.

As someone who also worked in broadcasting in Hong Kong in the ‘80s and ‘90s, around the time of the Tiananmen crackdown and in the lead-up to the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, I personally would have liked to have seen a more detailed account of his time during this period. That said, the chapters on Radio Caroline and Classic FM more than make up for that. In addition, his relationship with his father, actor Robin Bailey, is equally fascinating, including his account of appearing on the TV show ‘This is your life’. I highly recommend Nick’s memoir.
