From talk of closure in 1939, through the remarkable wartime confidence to all-but clear its large debt, the book, packed with ‘stats’, covers the highs and lows of its remaining near 3 decades in the Cheshire League, which then was arguably the north’s leading non-league competition. It covers the period’s F.A.Cup successes (and failures!), the near-glory of the F.A.Trophy’s early years and finally the long-coveted championship title and promotion to the N.P.L. Featured too are the many outstanding players, such as locals Terry Allen, Peter Lomas, Ken Shirley and Derek Thorpe, alongside former Football League players such as Jack Haigh and Alf Ringstead, as well as future stars like Billy Haydock and Tony Parkes.
