Gordon Betts was born in 1926 and as an LCC scholar was educated at St Dunstan’s College in SE London. He initially studied law at the University of Cambridge. As a WW2 volunteer he served on the then trials carrier HMS Illustrious maintaining its development radar. He was then among the first to qualify in chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham. He later qualified part time at the University of Greenwich in state sponsored industrial management His professional career was spent with a major British oil company in R and D, design and commissioning of new process technology, and finally in the technical and economic evaluation of major new capital projects.


On retirement and as a mature student, he studied applied philosophy at the University of Kent at Canterbury. His first book based on his doctoral thesis of 1999 was the Twilight of Britain – Cultural Nationalism, Multi-Culturalism and the Politics of Toleration was published in April 2002. His second book The Neo-Liberal Delusion – The End of Political and Moral Idealism was published in November 2010; followed by his third book Broken Britain – A Liberal Democracy in Crisis published in June 2013.
