…England in 1645 is a country riven by three years of civil war...

Captain Matthew Fletcher is seriously wounded the previous year and teeters between life and death. He spends the winter in London and by the spring has recovered, but permanently disabled he cannot return to active service in the Parliamentary army. Instead he reluctantly accepts an assignment to assist local magnate Joseph Manning and investigate strange disturbances in his village of Harringstead.

He arrives to find Manning’s steward murdered and the local minister convinced it is the work of witches, while the village is ripped apart by land disputes and family feuds. Needing to find one of Manning’s servants and his daughter’s secret lover, Matthew is pulled back to war torn London, full of rumour, conspiracy and peculiar religious sects. Assisted by his streetwise ex corporal, Ezra, he delves into its seedy and desperate underworld, is driven into the hands of the desperate ‘clubmen’ and has to confront disturbing reminders of his own past.

Tensions reach fever pitch in Harringstead, his assistant goes missing and Matthew must think again whether one of the ‘witches’ conceals dangerous secrets. Following another murder, Matthew is accused of being a Royalist spy, relentlessly pursued across town and country and seized by his old enemy from the army.

Set against the shattering conflict of the civil war Rivenland is a tense story of detection, intrigue and mystery.
