International financier Sarah Layman wants to discuss a ‘mystery’ with freelance journalist Carla Diemer. She won’t say what it is except it has nothing to do with finance. Carla arrives to find Sarah dead and is immediately embroiled in a murder investigation led by the dogged Chief Inspector Jenner.
Carla is determined to unravel the mystery and links up with the psychic investigator Ettie Rodway, who has also been approached by Sarah. Joining them is a maverick historian, obsessed with a lost Anglo Saxon Chronicle and Carla's dubiously motivated father. So begins their perilous search for revenge, discovery and intrigue spanning 1200 years, pitting them against forces of power, greed and deception.
Their search takes them across England from the brooding wetlands of the east to the shrouded hills of the west and even to America. From the ninth century they must find a ring, a sword, a broach and a belt, but this sweeps them into the swirling currents of a distant age where fearsome warriors fight out their bloody inter family feud. While these objects can solve the mystery, they may also unlock immense, unpredictable powers. Further unexplained deaths follow as more is discovered and, confronted by ruthless adversaries intent on the same discovery, the hunters become the hunted as they realise the Chronicle is much more than an obscure historical document.
