A difficult childhood dominated by an abusive mother forces Sally to bring herself and sibling family members up under her mothers critical eye. Sally’s father, whom she adores seems powerless to take on his feisty wife who is not only strong willed and bad tempered, but enjoys a drink and the attention of other men.


In between her mothers onslaughts, Sally attempts to lead as normal a life as possible, but conditions in the harsh coal mining town of Prestonpans and the attentions of two undesirable brothers push her over the edge.


Somehow, Sally manages to experience happier times whilst spent at a children’s home where the matron becomes a strong role model. The good habits learned whilst under her tutelage set Sally up to succeed. However, there is one old habit which Sally keeps and this comes back to haunt her...
