Tonight you glimpse your king as a ghastly spectre. Yet once I was a greater warrior than Achilles or Hector. Here’s what I’m praying for - an Anglo-Saxon epic which will rip and roar. Yeees! Louder than that sorry saga of The Trojan War, because my story shall splash so much blood upon the floor it will make men tremble for evermore

Excuse these crimson tears I sometimes cry, for there is still pain from the arrow which entered my right eye. Some chroniclers doubt that reports of this injury are true, but the shaft went right through - here, and here – coming out just below the left ear, pinning my head to the ground. Which explains why on this side I cannot hear a sound.

I will recall the history of my Anglo-Saxon folk while sitting here wrapped in this blue and gorgeous cloak, embroidered with golden leaves of an autumn oak, which once were brighter than the sunniest yolk. As was the battered crown I wear with a frown, for having let my people down. Don’t be frightened - be brave - while I place lighted candles upon this grave. And as their wax begins to melt, write down all the hurt and happiness I felt.
