Set in the Eighties the book is a rumbustious romp through the early fortunes of three recent graduates, Dickie, Melissa and Jeremy as they begin life in the real world. Irresponsible would-be gold digger Dickie is after Melissa’s inheritance as the only child of Sir David Warlock Brown, founder of the City’s most powerful bank. Sir David detests Dickie. Dickie is set a quest to make something of himself or never see Melissa again. Dickie starts with
Nippon Ichiban along with the erudite Jeremy Pennington-Smythe. Distrust of these new recruits by the Japanese sets in motion a rollercoaster ride that eventually results in three contracts for their execution from a senior Director Ito san, the Yakusa and the Russians. Only the lowly assistant manager Suzuki san and the enigmatic Yakatori bar owner Shinji stand in the way of the boys and their grizzly fate. The Caligula Club has been run by Esther and Trewbridge aka Clarissa, godparents to Melissa, since the 1950’s and it has become the most powerful organisation on earth. They too become intricately embroiled with Dickie’s future after he infiltrates his way into the Festival of Flora during one of their orgiastic feasts.
