This book is centered around life on an imaginary island in the Hebrides and covers the period leading up to and shortly after the First World War.

John the main character, whose only language is Gaelic, is a labourer on a local tack owned by a Colonel, who speaks only English – not a recipe for harmonious relations. John’s hard daily grind is only slightly alleviated by Prince, his loyal if at times temperamental horse.

This book touches on a number of themes such as social injustice. This is embodied by the tack owner, the greedy and selfish Colonel Gray who epitomises the semi-feudal system of land ownership where people were virtually owned by those such as the Colonel. This book also touches on other themes such as religion, the power of nature and physic influence of second sight and the evil eye.

The author has an intimate knowledge of the landscape and culture of the Gaels and this book would appeal to readers of all age groups with an interest in this type of Gaelic literature.
