Love Beyond Mars is a science fiction novel which is also a love and adventure story with a strong philosophical and sociological theme. It is set on an asteroid discovered accidentally by an American astronaut who has become lost in space. While awaiting rescue from Earth, he falls in love, witnesses a public execution, and embarks on two hazardous expeditions, one of which takes him through the jungle to the top of a volcano which is the focus of the people’s religious belief.
In addition to metaphysical questions such as the nature of space and time, it raises, explicitly or implicitly, issues such as the morality of capital punishment, the pros and cons of technological change, and the quest for a new spirituality. The story is narrated in a deceptively simple, almost childlike way by a mysterious woman whose identity is revealed at the end of the novel.
