James Maynard is a damaged man. From the early childhood death of his parents to his present position, seated as a tramp on a park bench talking to a young female reporter, his life has ping-ponged between highs and lows. He has been and still is addicted to drugs, drink and sex and their shadows are cast over him. Underneath his sorrow, he longs for his children and to be loved and to love. James has suffered a major breakdown; his confusion and reluctance to let go of fantasy plague the reporter and reader alike in their quest to arrive at his truth. Slowly his terrible secrets are revealed like the peeling away of the layers of an onion. The reader has to decide which truth to accept, for the reporter carries a terrible burden and her whole future hinges on the answer to the question: is he mad or bad, or just ill-used and misunderstood? Is there hope for him? Is there hope for the reporter? Before the book reaches its conclusion the reader is forced to face up to the nature of their human condition and question their own relationship with sin and compulsion, good and evil.
