To all outward appearances, Violet Imogen Protheroe was a charming, sophisticated and very intelligent woman who had achieved success as a teacher at a very early age. She was good – and she knew it! Her kind, affable style and approachability, however, masked a very tough and, at times, uncompromising nature. She ruled firmly with a rod of iron at Hillside School and everybody knew it! So when it came to her notice that James Arbuthnot Scroggy was working to prepare a book for teachers – one that had the very unusual title of ‘The V.I.P. Book’ – she secretly assumed it would be all about her. After all, there was no denying the fact that she was a very important person!

But how wrong can you be? Scroggy was writing his V.I.P. book from a very different perspective. He had two objectives in mind: First, he wanted to show off his skill and knowledge of work in the classroom by ‘putting his goods in the shop window.’ Second, he wanted to inspire his teacher colleagues with useful tips on Project Work – with projects that had actually worked. Seeking advice where he could from friends and experts – and support from his talented wife Mary – he set to work to produce his first manuscript. Undaunted by the prospects of failure, he persevered to complete his difficult task. Nothing was going to stop him – or so he thought. But he discovered several things in the process: Writing the book was only the beginning, not the end. Getting it accepted and published was a whole new ball game! He hoped Violet would like his book. But, more than that, he simply craved for some recognition as an author.
