After completing his first ever book for teachers – a description of the value and relevance of Project Work – James Scroggy found himself ‘hooked’ on the gentle art of writing. He couldn’t wait to write ‘book two’ and he had already decided that it would be the story of his long-promised trip to see his faraway nephew in New Zealand. But it was important to become known as a writer and it didn’t take much persuasion from his boss, Violet Imogen Protheroe, for him to start pushing together a little collection of some of the stories he had invented and used with many of his pupils, past and present.

The hardest thing was selecting the stories he wanted to preserve but, after several weeks thought, he eventually managed to choose some of his favourites. They were all stories he had found to be useful, whether as entertainment or a starting point for work in the classroom. He had sent two of them off to short-story competitions but they had been unsuccessful. Undaunted he was happy to include them in his new book, so that other teachers and children might try them out.
