Being an amateur detective is hard enough anytime, but when you are delving into history and dealing with unknown languages it’s virtually impossible! That’s what Scroggy discovers when he continues his investigation of ‘Merlin’s House’ in West Wales.

But with his usual persistence, he isn’t prepared to give up easily and, aided by his Welsh friends Thomas and Gareth, he pursues the challenge of ‘Ty Myrddin’ with its many difficulties and surprises. Things become even more difficult when the old house is put up for sale and he finds himself involved in unexpected house hunting, just at a time when his work at school is becoming much more demanding.

As a senior member of Staff, he is now expected to do more, lead by example and set high standards. But there are only so many hours in a day and Scroggy comes to realise that, try as he might, he simply cannot do all the things that are needed. At least, not if he’s going to do them properly!

So he decides on a compromise: The weeks before Christmas will be given to his schoolwork and then, in the New Year, he will prioritise the Welsh challenge. But it is not that simple. Christmas in Wales is fabulous, but it brings with it loads of surprises and Scroggy comes to the conclusion that his future is inextricably tied into the lives of many other people: People over whom he has little or no control!
