Ernie’s Underground Army is the story of a young man who was conscripted to work in the coal mines of Britain during World War II.

It tells of the best and the worst of a nation at war, and of the young men who fully expected to serve their country in the armed forces, but instead found themselves toiling deep beneath the earth in dangerous and often frightening conditions, where the fear of death and serious injury was as ever present as it was for those serving in the forces.

Frank Reed was conscripted as a Bevin Boy at the age of eighteen.  His approach was that he would ‘do his bit’ in the difficult and dangerous task he had been given.  His willingness to ‘muck in’ and learn the trade allotted to him earned him the respect and friendship of the professional miners he worked with.
