Like so many things in life, this story began from small beginnings and took on a life of its own. Jack Horsfall, an ex-regular soldier and the author of numerous guides to the battlefields of the First World War, literally stumbled over a grave in Ligny-en-Cambresis.

It proved to be the final resting place of the first Australian soldier killed in the First World War – 26 August 1914. He had fought with East Lancashire Regiment, a regiment close to Jack’s heart as his father had also fought with Lancashire regiments.

Jack began researching and found himself in Revolutionary France and on the long and dangerous journey of the convict ships to colonise Australia.

This story tells of the settlement of Australia, the growth of  the Chisholm family, the tragic death of a favourite son and the final return of his mother to the land of her ancestors, culminating in the French people repaying a debt of honour by naming a street in Ligny ‘Rue Chisholm’.

A truly fascinating tale of love, war and intrigue.
