No less so for Ronald G Moore, who found himself uprooted from his home in Portsmouth, after the tragic loss of his father at sea, and evacuated to the countryside for his safety. Like so many children of the war, he had to adjust to a new rural lifestyle, catching rabbits, climbing trees and even scrumping the odd apple!
Eight to Sixteen tells the story of Ronald’s experience of these wartime years. While sometimes reminiscent of a pastoral idyll, the war nevertheless impacted almost every aspect of his life., whether for better or for worse. He often wryly observes the differences between then and now, but as he mentions, ‘what goes around comes around’ – situations may change, but human behaviour never does.
Ronald G Moore was born in Portsmouth on 20th October 1930. He was evacuated following the fire blitz on 10th January 1941. Educated at Portsmouth Southern Grammar School, 1942 – 1946, this was followed by three years at H.M. Dockyard School, and becoming a joiner and cabinet maker. He did National Service from 1951 to 1953, then worked in the drawing offi ce of Shop Fitting Company until 1973. He retired in 1993 as Managing Director of Contract Furnishing Company.
