In 1933, Killamarsh became home to a 5-year old orphan boy. Taken in by Aunt Polly and Uncle Alfred Evans, Bernard Dye found all the love and warmth he craved. Now, Bernard recalls his childhood and the village as it was in the 1930’s and ‘40s.

Games and pranks, schooldays, fairs and feasts, including ‘All About Owd Tup’ are mingled with memories of village characters including the fearsome Bobby Dobbs and Billy Whewell the fishmonger. Schooldays during wartime give way to teenage years and memories of the Saturday night ’Monkey Run’, first jobs and National Service.

The second part of the book tells how Kynwold’s marsh beside the River Rother became home to a roaming band of Anglo-Saxons around the 5th century AD and how that settlement evolved into modern Killamarsh.
