In 1985, Tim Clay was approaching his twenties and going nowhere, fast. He had grown up in a small northern town and had pretty much flunked his A levels and in effect any future he may have had. On a whim he decided to go to the Army Careers Office to see what they could offer him. Before he realised it, he was marching across a parade square in a strange uniform, in the cold Autumn wind - and a nasty man was shouting at him. He wanted his mum.

The next twelve months saw him change from a clueless, unemployed drifter to something neither he nor his family and friends thought was possible - a man. A more mature, more sensible, fitter and less selfish person emerged from a tubby, lazy underachiever. He learnt the basics of soldiering and a few languages as he became a linguist in the Intelligence Corps of the British Army. He also learnt that the most important thing about being a soldier was to keep your sense of humour.
