Nottinghamshire, 1984.

The county's in the grip of a bitter, acrimonious strike called by the National Union of Mineworkers. Jimmy Wade is pure evil, he first killed at the age of eleven, he's now a coal miner in Nottinghamshire.

Mick Reynolds is in a hateful marriage and has a pathological hatred of women, he's a sergeant in the Metropolitan Police. When Reynolds is sent to police the strike, his duties involve escorting Wade and other miners breaking the strike into work every day.

Thrown together by circumstance and recognising each other’s murderous natures, they embark on a brutal killing spree, using Wade's natural cunning and Reynolds knowledge of forensics and police procedures to evade detection.

The two men are pursued in Nottinghamshire by Det Insp Flint and in London by Det Insp Johnson. The killers revel in playing games, taunting the police, ultimately intending to kill one of the detectives. As the police close in, the story reaches a thrilling and unexpected climax.

From Comment
2017-01-29 Linda C. For those who enjoy crime thrillers, this is an superb and well written read. The murder scenes will definitely chill you to the bone.

The story flows nicely, making it easy for the reader to follow, while keeping them in anticipation with each page turn.

Scenery description was excellent, making it very easy to mentally picture the surroundings. The different characters were also so convincingly created, that
I found myself sometimes fluctuating in anger or fondness towards them.

The effort put forth in sharing police procedure, makes one very appreciative of how much painstaking work is involved in during investigations.

I also enjoyed learning about England's historical Coal miner strike in 1984, as well as different towns and villages around England, since I'm in the United States
and not familiar with same.

Loved this read, and highly recommend it to crime thriller devotees. The author did a great job. I had a difficult time pausing for breaks in order to tend to daily obligations. I'm already looking forward to the sequel.
2017-01-01 Helen .... A brilliant debut novel from Trevor Negus who's attention to detail and clever twists make this a great read for those who love crime thrillers. This book will have you on the edge of your seat unable to stop reading as you follow the characters on an intricate chase during one of the most turbulent periods in recent history, the 1984 minors strike.
